Abstract

|
Endotracheal intubation is the most reliable and the safest way of maintaining airway during general anesthesia. Unfortunately however, endotracheal, tube may occasionally be obstructed as a result of collapse, kingking, foreign body, or secretion within the lumen. A case of airway obstruction is herein presented of which the discovery was significantly delayed until dark blood was seen following skin incision. Use of high gas flow, prone position of the patient, and misunderstanding of the cause of electrcardiographic abnormalities were responsible for the delayed discovery of the airway obstruction by mucus plug within the lumen of the endotracheal tube.
